mono, stereo, and 4-channel versions of Gesang de Jünglinge

Guest presenter Hans Tutschku

Can we listen to reproductions of spatial music? How was this issue considered at the beginnings of electronic music? Join us as we explore these questions through the lens of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s seminal work Gesang de Jünglinge, a piece of electronic music written between 1955 and 1956.

In this workshop, will listen to two versions of the work as a whole (13 minutes each) as well as compare several excerpts from these different versions of this work. We will listen to both the University’s (very rare) 1959 monophonic and 1962 stereophonic vinyl pressings, as well as a digital 4-channel version and it’s ‘de-noised’ counterpart.

The work itself, originally conceived, composed, and premiered for five-channels, will be introduced and discussed by guest presenter, Professor Hans Tutschku. Theywill discuss the history and technological production of the work, discuss its conceptual and expressive goals, as well as share their collection of recordings from the works original recording session with young soprano Josef Protschka.
